Strength Training Strengthens Bones
One of the biggest issues for seniors & women is the loss of bone density. Bone density is directly related to the ability to get through a fall without a fracture- usually a hip fracture. Osteoporosis is the thinning of bone tissue and loss of bone density over time. The thinner your bones are- the more likely you are to have fractures. Osteoporosis can lead to immobility and a lower quality of life. Osteoporosis is also a primary factor for adults ending up in nursing homes. One of the benefits of starting a strength training program for seniors, women and people of all ages, is the increased density of bone mass- especially spinal bone mass. Strength training also helps people retain calcium. Calcium, by itself, cannot defeat Osteoporosis. In my opinion, the most important thing is not the length of life, but the quality of life. Being able to stay in your home and keep your mobility will help ensure a better quality of life.
