The Rest of the Story: Coaching Biography

I started coaching in my hometown of Alden, Iowa in the fall of 1992.  I was a volunteer varsity assistant coach for the Alden Redskins under my own coach, Brad Van Rooyen.   After 6 years as an assistant, I was named the head varsity football coach in the summer of 1998.  I’ve had a few special moments in my career that I’m very proud of.  In 2000, we had the smallest team ever to make the state playoffs in Iowa High School History. We had 18 kids suited up and in the first round and drew the two time defending state champions: West Bend Mallard.  If that wasn’t intimidating enough, they also had 66 kids on their roster.  Our men fought hard the whole way, but we eventually fell 7-12.  That season our offense was ranked #1 in our district and averaged over 400 yards a game.  It was the first time our school had been to the state playoffs in 15 years.  That spring, in 2001, we won our first Conference Track Championship in 25 years.  It was a great moment when they announced SCMT was 2nd and we knew they were going to announce us shortly as Conference Champions.  Since our small school merged with a larger school I have been coaching Middle School football.  We have been very successful posting a 45-15 record. In Track & Field, I started off as the throws coach for three years and was named the men’s varsity head coach in the summer of 2007.
